Edward Barry

Another death due to a White Pass accident, this on March 18, 1918. Ed Barry had survived the 1917 accident that killed the McKenzies, but on this day, the rotary engine rolled at milepost 106 and killed him.
Ed was born on August 18, 1880 in California and had come to Skagway in 1899 from Tacoma to be a painter and later a WP&YR engineer.

  1. I have that he was the son of Katherine and Richard Barry. Katherine was born 1843 in Ireland. The 1880 census shows them in Oakland where Richard was a butcher. By 1900 the census shows her a widow with 5 kids: Thomas, Richard Reed, Mary B. Fitzgerald, James A. and Edward. I think all the kids were born in Smartsville, California except for James who was born in Montana. Katherine died only a few months after her son, in November 1918. This is from censuses, World War One sign ups, directories and Skagway Death records.
